Cape Town police say they are hot on the trail of an alleged con artist, who's been scamming companies out of laptop notebooks.

The commercial crimes unit says it hopes to arrest the man (who uses the alias "Colin Rall") by the end of today.

Rall has allegedly been ordering laptops from various IT companies, using fake proof-of-payment documents.

One company says the brazen fraudster has cost it at least 50-thousand rand.

Woman claims she was conned out of 300-thousand 9/17/2007 4:38:26 PM
A Mpumalanga couple say they were defrauded out of 300-thousand-rand, by a man who's been targeting IT companies in the mother city.

An EWN investigation has found Colin Rall (who claims to work for a company called "Pro Rugby SA") has allegedly defrauded several firms.

He orders laptops by providing what looks like legitimate proof of payment. But a few days later, the fleeced companies realise the money's not in their accounts.

Police have since confirmed Colin Rall is an "alias" used by the suspected con artist, adding they plan to arrest him by the end of today.

Standerton resident, Sandra Botha, says she's been trying to track down Rall for 2 years.

Victims of IT scamster want justice 9/19/2007 12:24:37 PM
The victims of an alleged con artist say they hope justice will be served.

Colin Rall has allegedly swindled several companies out of an estimated 350-thousand rand over the past few years.

But there may be more, as police still have to calculate and confirm the exact impact of his trickery.

Rall was exposed after an IT company sent EWN an e-mail, warning other companies to be vigilant.

Rall claims to be a buyer for Pro Rugby SA and orders laptops.

He then gives falsified proof of payment, before exiting a firm's premises with the goods.

Mpumalanga resident Susan Botha says she and her husband were conned out of 300 thousand rand, when Rall "sold" a Pro Rugby SA franchise to them.

Rising ire in Cape Town IT circles as conman remains free 9/22/2007 11:57:56 AM
A Cape Town IT company that's been scammed by an alleged fraudster, says the conman is much talked about in business circles.

Eyewitness News first revealed alleged trickster Colin Rall's modus operandi a week ago; he orders laptops from IT firms then disappears after giving false proof of payment.

It has been established that Rall owes hundreds of thousands of rand to companies and individuals.

He has a previous conviction against him for similar offences.

Open Minds IT Solutions' Peter Luke - whose company was also scammed - says Rall is notorious with the IT world.

Luke says he is aware of other companies which have suffered a similar fate at Rall's hands.

He further says police have had opportunity to arrest the conman, but still have not done so.

Luke puts this down to police incompetence.
